Weekend update…

A little know black history fact:

Memorial Day began weeks after the Civil War ended in 1865, when thousands of freed slaves risked their lives to properly establish a cemetery in South Carolina.

Yale University historian David W. Blight shares:

On May 1, 1865, 10,000 former slaves gathered at the cemetery site they had rebuilt and elaborately decorated in Charleston, South Carolina. Their courage is inspiring, because they were making a large-scale public demonstration of their love and respect for fallen Union soldiers—within weeks of the end of the war. Their brave actions easily could have brought their families into harm’s way from white neighbors who still strongly supported the defeated Confederacy.

It’s  Monday and so that means linking up with Tara for another edition of Weekend Update!

Weekend-Edition

It has been a few week since I have shared with you all and I sure have missed it!!

This weekend was jam packed and I am going to fill you all in without making this too long I hope……

I am going to start my weekend on Thursday as it was my husband’s 40th birthday.  I had originally planned to throw him a surprise happy hour with lots an lots of people but circumstances turned that plan into a small intimate dinner with his family and a few friends.  It worked out just fine!

Friday:

The hubby kept the birthday celebration going with a happy hour at a DC watering hole called Stans.  If you are in the DC area and you want some good drinks and wangs (baked)….this is the place to go.  Be warned-the drinks are the truth!!!

The glass with the lime in it is the Gin…the carafe the tonic!  The truth I tell you!!!

This was the first time in a long time that I actually hung out with him and ‘his boys’. It was an interesting experience (being a fly on the wall was fun!).

Saturday:

The kiddies stayed at my husband’s parents house so that meant the ability to sleep in a bit.  It was my plan to sleep in a bit but still get up to meet with my BGR crew for a Saturday morning run.  I woke up with a headache and decided to listen to my body and get some more rest.  My body was thankful-I slept until 10:30am!

I got up and got dressed for a run after picking up my race packet for Jeremy’s Run.  I had my last long run scheduled but the sun and the humidity changed that to a 3 mile run-haha! It was a beautiful change of scenery.

The rest of Saturday was spent cleaning house and doing laundry-well at least an effort was made-haha!

Sunday:

Earlier in the week I won tickets to see The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at The Adventure Theatre MTC.  The show was FANTASTIC!!! A little twist to the original but twisted enough just to keep the kiddies interested and intrigued.  They had never seen the original so this was a 1st for them and they LOVED IT!!!  The Adventure Theatre is a small local theratre with each cast player playing many roles and close enough to the audience that the children stayed very engaged and entertained.  If you are in the DC area and have small children (ages 3 and up), I would recommend seeing a play at this theatre.

The theatre is located in the Glen Echo Park that houses another theatre  (http://www.glenechopark.org/puppet-co-1) a carousel  (http://glenechopark.org/dentzel-carousel) and a park and fun activities for the family.

The kids had a great time!

The rest of the day was spent with family visits and cookouts.

 My favorite part…..CRABS!!!!

While eating we saw this lizard, salamander type thing….totally freaked me out! I am not used to seeing these kinds of things in Maryland….Jamaica maybe….anyone know what this is?

Monday:

I ran in Jeremy’s run in Olney, MD.  It is a small local annual Walk/Run race to benefit The Partnership for Drug Free Kids, the Jeremy Glass Memorial Scholarship Fund at theKolmac Foundation, and MedStar Montgomery’s Addiction and Mental Health Services Outreach Program “Jeremy’s Hour: Knowledge Can Save a Life”. Participants can choose between a 10K race, a 5K walk/run, or a 1 mile fun run.

The hubby and kiddies ran the 1 mile fun run and I ran the 10k.

Thanks to this ladies shirt….I PRd by 3 mins-lol!!!

Nothing like a little motivation to get you going!!! I wasn’t behind her long!

It was a rolling hills race but nothing that I haven’t had during my training but hills surely do make a big difference.  The sun, heat and humidity got me a bit too but overall a good run and a PR so can’t be too mad about that :).

The rest of the day included resting and grocery shopping.

I am exhausted but grateful for the wonderful fun filled weekend.  I will enjoy the next few days of rest I preparation for my half on Saturday.

THANK YOU FOR ALL THOSE WHO SERVE AND ALL THOSE WHO HAVE GIVING THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE!!

I have never heard of that place in DC, I’ll have to check it out!! Congrats on your PR!! Awesome job! I ran a race on Sunday as well, a half marathon. Not a PR for me though, which I was totally fine with!

I wasn’t even trying for a Pr as it was hot and hilly but i will take it 🙂

I am actually trying to let go of PRs and just run to finish but the competitive side of me has won out thus far-lol!

I hope you had a good race even though you didn’t PR-where was it?

It’s hard to let the competitive side go. If I pay money to run a race, I have to be comeptative with myself, otherwise, why pay the money? That’s just my opinion though. I ran the Alexandria Running Festival Half marathon

I didn’t know there would be crabs but I was happy they were there 🙂
I totally got in trouble for not telling you to come by the Thomassons on Sunday. Actually mama T said you are showing out and daddy said he hasn’t seen you in like 2 or 3 years…you got some explaining to do!

Yay! Congrats on the PR! You rock lady! I would love to take Haylie to the carousel at Glen Echo when she is a little older. I delivered a carousel themed cake there a few years back and remember how beautiful it was. I absolutely love carousels. The adventure theater sounds like fun too! Have a great week!
