What in the cuboid?!?!?

Well I went to the Dr. today. I have cuboid syndrome. I basically strained/aggravated the ligament that covers the cuboid bone. I tell you only me….the most random and obscure foot syndrome and I have it! SMH!

WHAT IS CUBOID SYNDROME?

Cuboid syndrome is a condition characterized by subluxation (partial dislocation) of the cuboid bone in the foot .

The foot comprises of many small bones, one of which is the cuboid. The cuboid bone is situated at the outer aspect of the mid-foot and is connected to adjacent bones via strong connective tissue forming joints. These joints provide outer foot stability and allow movement to take place.

During weight bearing activity, certain movements of the foot and ankle and contraction of certain muscles of the lower leg and foot (e.g. peroneus longus), stress is placed on the cuboid bone and surrounding soft tissue. If these forces are excessive and beyond what the bone and surrounding soft tissue can withstand, tearing of the supportive connective tissue may occur. This may allow the cuboid bone to sublux or partially move out of its normal alignment relative to the adjacent foot bones. When this occurs, the condition is known as cuboid syndrome.

Causes of cuboid syndrome

Cuboid syndrome may develop due to excessive traction on the cuboid due to repetitive contraction of the peroneus longus muscle . This may occur in association with Peroneus Longus Tendinopathy. Cuboid syndrome may also develop following a Sprained Ankle whereby the foot and ankle are turned inward excessively (inversion), therefore causing damage to the connective tissue holding the cuboid bone in position. Most patients who develop this condition have excessively pronated feet (flat feet) although the condition may also be seen in those with lateral ankle instability. Cuboid syndrome is particularly common in ballet dancers and runners.

Treatment:

Rest, Ice, Roll

Good News:

-I can still run but only on relatively flat surfaces…..that will be hard to find in my area.

Bad news:

-I can’t do my track workouts for 2 weeks

-I forgot to bring my insoles and so he was not able to but something on them that could give me some relief….#badpatient

    Well, I have never 😦 That stinks, a runner needs their feet.
    I have never heard of that aliment, I feel your pain though, I had a stress fracture and had to take time off. Injuries suck, but it’s best just to find a cross-train activity swim, bike, something that doesn’t aggravate it and let it heal. Your feet are too important, give them some TLC and I hope you heal quickly.

    You certainly seem to be having back luck with the injuries lately. I’ve never heard of Cuboid syndrome before. I’m sad that you’ll be missing my last track workout, but you need to take it easy. I really hope that you heal quickly and make a full recovery. Stop getting injured! 🙂

    Ugh. Sorry to hear it. Problems with those tiny little bones in your feet is no joke. A bone-in-foot problem similar to this is what wrecked my son’s senior year of cross country. I wish you a speedy recovery.

    Never heard of it! I was born with flat feet but wore those corrective shoes until the second grade and now I can wear high heels every day, all day without thinking twice. Follow doctors orders so you can get back out there and do the things you love!
