On this day 3 years ago, my life changed!!
On March 29, 2013 my mom was just not feeling well. She was having stomach pains and bowel issues. She decided to go to the hospital to get checked out. Finding nothing wrong and since she was scheduled for a colonoscopy on the following Monday, they admitted her and determined they would monitor her for the weekend.
Since there was no real emergency or issue, I did not go visit her in the hospital that weekend. I told her I would come by after her procedure on Monday.
On my way to work Monday morning came my mom called. She told me she was not feeling well and that something was wrong. I asked her what she was feeling? Had she talked to the nurses? You see my mom is known to be a little dramatic at times and I took this moment to be one of them. I told her she was probably nervous about the colonoscopy and that she was stressing and worrying herself for no reason. We did a deep breathing exercise together over the phone and I told her I would talk to her after the procedure.
A few hours later, I got a phone call.
A phone call that I had feared my entire life.
You need to meet us at Adventist, your mom has had a heart attack!
On April 1st ……April Fools day 2013…..this was no joke, this was not funny….my mother had had a heart attack.
A MASSIVE heart attack!
100% blocked artery Heart Attack!
I am prayerful and thankful to God that she was in the hospital at the time. Prayerful and thankful to God that the hospital staff were available, attentive, present and responsive. Prayerful and thankful to God that she survived!
That day she received a stent in her heart that opened her artery and allowed for it to properly circulate blood to her heart.
Her healing and recovery did not go as smoothly as we would have hoped and prayed for. Every month after that she was in the hospital for some kind of heart issue and complication which lead to a triple bypass in September of 2013, early retirement from her stressful University job and 3 more stents in July of 2014.
The road to recovery has not been easy and in compounded with her not being as active as she should and could be. I try to encourage her to walk more, use all the equipment (in moderation) that she has in the basement (she has an entire gym!) She has stopped inviting me to her Dr appointments and so I am only getting information from her versus the Dr. however, according to her, she is doing well except for her weight gain. [insert….BE more active mom!!!!]
Outside of this she is still with us and I am thankful and prayerful for that every day!
Take care of your HEART!!

Hi, this is really a pathetic matter you shared here. I am showing condolence for your mom. But one thing I need to mention that here you have done a good job as your posting will help a lot to care about this problem. Thank you.

Thank you!
I am hoping that you using the word ‘pathetic’ was a mistype as the rest of your comment is kind 😉

Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I took the liberty of sharing it on social media too because this is such an important topic. Over the last few weeks, I’ve watched a few documentaries that speak of the correlation between regular exercise, good diet and a healthy heart.
Forks Over Knives in particular made me think twice about my own lifestyle because in the past few years, I’ve piled on some pounds and even though I am not particularly unhealthy, I know there has to be an effect on my overall stats.
I took some measures to change my diet too. There’s always something we can do better for our health so thanks for sharing this inspiration with us. I am so happy your mom is doing much better and I hope she continues to get even healthier.
Have a great week, FitballingRunningMom

To get such a call on April fools… Sheesh! Glad she was already at the hospital so there wouldn’t have been any added delay in getting her treated.

Oh my gosh, I am so glad that she was able to get care right away. Her story is the perfect example of how a heart attack can present so differently in women – feeling “off” and having GI issues. I hope she continues to take care of herself.

That is so scary; how lucky y’all were that she was already in the hospital.
I wish I could get all of my family to follow my lead, but as they say, you can lead a horse to water . . .
Here’s hoping your mom has many more healthy years with you (and sees the light on exercise).
