Thursday Throwdown…Who/What Motivates Me?

Motivation can come from anywhere…yourself, your environment, your family, your friends…look around and motivation can be everywhere!

Today on Throwdown Thursday (TT), Sarah, Lex and I want to know:

who/what motivates you?

mo·ti·vate

verb

  1. provide (someone) with a motive for doing something.

Who motivates me:

Myself

I have to say my 1st and #1 motivator is ME! Remember last TT, we talked about MANTRAS and I shared a few of mine with you.  Yup those mantras motivate me but my internal push and drive also motivates me.

I am pretty much a self motivating person. I mean I have to be to have become a morning workout person….stil can’t believe I am that person that gets up between 5 and 5:30 most mornings to workout.  What I know is, if I don’t get up in the morning, a workout will not happen so I have to motivate myself to get up and get going!

When I was training for half-marathons, I would find a training plan (I mostly used Hal Higdon) and would follow it pretty closely.  Initially, I used to run with a local running group in the mornings but often they would bail due to weather or one thing or another….so much for group motivation. Thankfully, because I am self motivated, I was able to still get up and get my run in despite the weather or anything else.

Without self motivation, I think it would be very hard to get this accomplished in any aspect of life.

Outside of my fitness life, I am still pretty self motivating. One example would be at in my job.  When I started 2 years ago, I came into a position that had bee vacant for many years and previous to the vacancy had been more of an administrative (desk job..pushing papers) position.  I am not a desk job/paper pusher kind of person and so I knew that if I was going to stay at this job (which I intend to for a while), I was going to have to re-create it. This was greatly motivating as I got the green light from my supervisor to create the position to best serve our clients….YES! Once I got fully acclimated in the needs of my clients, I have been able to re-create my position in a way that allows me to engage and interact with many people on different levels, support our clients at a much better level and above all significantly reduced the desk-job/paper pushing!

My parents:

My parent’s play two roles in terms of motivation.  They have always motivated me to do my best, taker reasonable  risks, learn from failures and celebrate successes. As parents, they have been my #1 motivators and cheerleaders my entire life.   Most recently, the table have shifted a little with both of my parents having health issues.  I now am working on being a motivator to them to be encouraged that even with their illnesses, they can still be active in a way that is healthy for them.  My motivational speeches aren’t working too well these days but that just makes me more motivated to keep on trying 😉

My Sister/Brother:

These 2 are my rocks! If ever and whenever, I doubt myself, all I have to do it give them a call and the motivation comes spewing through the phone lines! From removing my self doubt, to talking me off the ledge, to pumping me with motivational talk, they are #1!

My Children:

If you have been reading my blog for anytime, you know that my kids are my world!! I give prayers and thanks to God everyday for choosing me to be their mom!

My children motivate me everyday!! They are the reason why I get up every morning to workout. They motive me to set a healthy and fit example for them.  They  motivate me to show them that being good at your craft takes patience and practice. They motivate me to want to continue to be that example for them.

As you know, both of my kids are actively involved in sports. My son plays on a travel soccer team and my daughter, has just been invited to join the competitive gymnastics team at her gym.  Yeah, I have to keep up with these athletes and so there in lies my motivation.  I love the fact that when I am at any of their activities, they wont hesitate to ask me to participate.  The other day at my son’s soccer game, my daughter challenged me to a cart wheel race….she won by the way-lol!

My Husband:

My husband supports and motivates me to try new things and to get outside of my comfort zone.  When I was doing the Charlie Mike weight training program, he was such a great motivator in me choosing and doing heavier weights.  He often would say ‘um, I am pretty sure you can go heavier than that’. When I doubted myself, he motivated me to ‘just try it-I will be here to spot you; even though I don’t think you will need it’. He was right most of the time….except for shoulders…. I almost decapitated myself listening to him..lol!!

My girlfriend:

This chick right here…..never says no to any of my crazy ideas!!  She is always there with a motivating, ‘sure you can do it!’, ‘you got this!’, ‘if you gonna do it…then do it!’, ‘come on push through, you got this!’.   You get the idea-right! She is my #1 race supporter and motivator.  When I was training for half marathons and the long run mileage was getting higher and I would fret about it, she would always give me the motivational pep talk that I needed to get it done!

We support each other in our fitness journey as well.  I think I am her #1 motivator, pushing her to keep going, helping her to see her successes and reminder her where and why she started.  On the days that she is struggling to go to the gym, a few minutes on the phone and I have giving her the motivation she needs to head into the gym and get the work done.

It is so amazingly awesome to be motivated by others and to motivate others.  I am so blessed to have motivational relationships with people who are so important to me.

What about you, who motivates you? Who do you motivate?

I’ve been thinking about motivation a lot the past few weeks. In comparison to others too. Some people really need that hand held, others just go out and get it done. Some cut theirself short and others have no problems going beyond what a training plan calls for. Some people in the gym need to be held accountable for every set, while others try and get in just one more… I don’t know that any one of them are wrong or less…just different! We all do need to motivation and we all need to find what motivates us. Great post Tamieka!

See, this is why I think if I met you in real life we’d be friends.
Self motivation is huge, I am one of those people that dislike lazy people. Not in the sense it sounds. But I like to be surrounded by people who are okay with working hard to get what they want vs. the sitting around wishing and hoping it will happen kind.
I envy your ability to get up in the 5 o clock hour.
I recently switched this week for the first time in so many years to evening workouts, and I am not liking them much. I either have to readjust my entire eating schedule so I enjoy the evening runs better. Or I need to get my butt out of bed earlier and get it done before work, which in my case would be having to be out the door by 5…
Yeah, hate to admit it I am not a morning person. But maybe in a few more weeks when the sun is actually starting to come up around that hour it will be a little easier to think about:)

I despise lazy people….just the way it sounds! I don’t mince my words on that at all and my friends think I am so mean but it really does drive me crazy!!! I don’t have any lazy friends..thankfully and try not to be around lazy people.

I am NOT morning person AT ALL but ifI want to get the workout done, I have to get up early otherwise the day will take over and no workout will happen!

I am so glad you said that! I actually am not friends with lazy people either or if I am they soon become casual acquaintances LOL. I also can’t stand having lazy people work for me. If fact I actually fired my aunt from working for me a few years back because someone told me she would purposely arrive late to the weddings we were decorating for right after we finished the hard work of unloading all of the equipment. LOL yeah, it should have been a more awkward conversation, but I just went all business on her LOL

I admire the depth of your motivational and support system – you have some great folks in your corner there, lady.
And I must say, you motivate me. I love coming onto your blog because I always know there will be something here that makes me want to get up and do something.
As they say in Jamaica, one hand wash the other – they motivate you and you motivate me and then it’s my job to pass that onto someone else.

YOU are such an awesome motivator! (and your smile lights up my computer screen). YOU may have heard (or read about it LOL), but I get more motivation from newbies than I do from seasoned athletes. I love seeing the excitement in their eyes as they reach new goals. Last year, I was near the finish line of a marathon, and seeing all the first-timers coming through (smiling, crying, gritting their teeth, limping, etc.) was such an awesome thing to witness. (sorry, I totally spaced out on your linkup…maybe I can look through and find a #thursdaythrowback post appropriate to link…)

Awwww…thanks…I do love to smile 😉

I can see how the newbie excitment can be so motivating!

No worries….we will be around when you have an appropriate post. We will share out next few weeks months themes soon.

I’m sorry I haven’t had time to link up with you recently — I promise I’ll be back!

I’m very self motivated, too. And my parents motivate me — in a different way — I look at how they have aged and I know I don’t want that for myself. Despite the fact they’re both quite healthy for their ages, they didn’t take good care of themselves and they could definitely have aged better.

My runner friends definitely motivate me & I try to return the favor.

I agree about the parents…that is a good motivator. I get so frustrated with my parents because I know they can do better but choose not too…uuugh!

Running friends are the best motivators-right!

No worries….we will be around for you to link up when you can 🙂
